Pokémon (also known Pocket Monsters) is a Japanese media franchise that was created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1995. Since its creation, it has become one of the most popular multi-media franchises in the world.
The Pokémon universe centres around the eponymous fictional creatures known as Pokémon. Trainers take on the job of catching and training these creatures, preparing them to battle for sport.
1996 saw the release of the first video games: Pokémon Red and Green. Created by Game Freak for Nintendo, these role-playing games became immediately successful. Various future instalments were subsequently released, including Pokémon Gold and Silver (1999), Pokémon Diamond and Pearl (2006), Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen (2004), Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver (2009), Pokémon X and Y (2013), Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire (2002), Pokémon Platinum (2008), and Pokémon Sword and Shield (2019) — amongst others.
Throughout the history of the franchise, there have also been multiple films and television series. Most of these follow the exploits of a young Trainer called Ash Ketchum, Pikachu (his lightning-tailed companion), and his friends. Ash’s main objective is to become a Pokémon Master and complete the Pokédex.
