The X-Men first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1963. The team of mutant superheroes were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and have become one of the most recognisable and popular superhero groups in Comic book history.

Magneto, a.k.a. Erik Lehnsherr (Ian McKellen), is the series adversary, who regards mutants as evolutionarily superior to humans and rejects the idea of peaceful human-mutant coexistence. Throughout the X-men series, Magneto makes various attempts to conquer the world to enable mutants to replace humans as the dominant species.
