Founded by Dr. Dre (a world-famous music producer) and Jimmy Iovine (an executive of a record company) in 2006, Beats — also known as Beats By Dre — is a manufacturer of high-quality audio products. Since 2014, the company has been a subsidiary of Apple.
Based out of the US, Beats By Dre focuses on the production of headphones and speakers. However, they also operate a subscription-based streaming service: Beats Music.
During the early years of the company, Dr. Dre and Iovine saw a gap in the market. The music industry, dominated by Apple’s signature earbuds, was suffering from substandard audio quality. To combat this, Iovine enlisted the help of various popular musicians (including Pharrell Williams, M.I.A., Gwen Stefani, and will.i.am), who offered their assistance during the early stages of product development.
The first Beats By Dre products were manufactured in partnership with Monster Cable, launching their first product, a pair of headphones, in 2008. The company saw immediate success, largely due to endorsements from various pop and hip-hop performers (who offered product placement opportunities within their music videos) and through the development of co-branded products with other popular celebrities.
Dr. Dre emphasised that listeners were unable to fully appreciate the songs being created by their favourite artists. As such, Beats implements increased bass and noise-cancellation technology for the optimal audio experience.
