Released in 1997, Men In Black (MIB) is a film and television franchise that centres around a fictional non-governmental organisation that regulates and monitors alien activity on Earth. The eponymous agents are commonly seen using memory-erasing ‘Neuralyzers’ — devices that allow them to keep the existence of aliens secret from the public.
Inspired by the Aircel/Marvel comic-book series of the same name, which was written by Lowell Cunningham, the Men In Black films started off as a trilogy: Men In Black (1997), Men In Black II (2002), and Men In Black 3 (2012).
The original films starred Will Smith in the role of James Darrell Edwards III/Agent J, a young NYPD officer selected to join the organisation by Agent K. Kevin Brown/Agent K is played by Tommy Lee Jones. (Actor Josh Brolin later took on the role of a young Agent K in the third film.) Throughout the original trilogy, Agent J and Agent K must fight various alien foes that pose a threat to the world.
In the first film, the duo is pitted against an alien bug known as Edgar, who intends to escape with a powerful energy source called ‘the Galaxy’. The second film introduces a sinister alien seductress on the hunt for a vital power source used by her race’s enemies. Concluding the trilogy, the third film is a time-travelling adventure wherein the eponymous Men In Black attempt to prevent a Boris The Animal, a criminal Boglodite, from taking his revenge against Agent K, who enabled his capture in 1969.
2019 saw the release of Men In Black: International. This film introduced a new cast of characters, featuring new recruit Agent M (Tessa Thompson) and Agent H (Chris Hemsworth) in the leading roles. Unlike previous films, International focuses on a new type of threat: a mole inside the organisation.
