The Hobbit trilogy of films is based on the 1937 novel of the same name, by J. R. R. Tolkien. Together, the three films act as a prequel to ‘The Lord of the Rings’ film trilogy, which is also inspired by the J.R.R. Tolkien novels. The Hobbit films are titled; ‘An Unexpected Journey’ (2012), ‘The Desolation of Smaug’ (2013), and ‘The Battle of the Five Armies’ (2014).
The trilogy follows Dwarf Prince and warrior Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) and his loyal crew of Dwarves as they journey to their former Homeland of Erebor, to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and its vast treasure hoard from the selfish and terrible dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch).
To do this, Thorin must retrieve the Arkenstone (also known as the King’s Jewel) so that he can unite the other tribes of the dwarves under his rule and rally them to protect the mountain from other foes who wish to take it from them.
Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) is convinced by Gandalf (Ian McKellen) to join Thorin and his crew on their quest, in the role of ‘Burglar’. Along the way, Bilbo encounters Gollum (Andy Serkis) and accidentally becomes the owner of the one Ring. Bilbo must help Thorin find the jewel and help the dwarves to kill the mighty Smaug, all while hiding his golden secret.
