First created in 1966 by writer and former Air-Force pilot Gene Roddenberry, this American media franchise has run for over fifty years and become a pop-culture phenomenon that has intimidated other franchises with its complexity and scope. Its firm basis in Science-fiction has left space for political, philosophical, diverse, emotional and powerful storylines that have gripped fans around the world.
The franchise has told hundreds of stories with thousands of original characters including Spock, Captain Kirk, and Jean-Luc Picard to name just three.
In a nutshell, the franchise follows the intergalactic adventures of various space explorers from Starfleet. Their heroic feats have featured in 12 movies and various Television shows to date- not to mention the countless comic book version and novelizations.
The original series (1966–1969) followed the adventures of starship Enterprise crew and their mission of exploration. The Animated Series (1973–1974) depicted the exploits of the Starfleet vessel USS Enterprise as it explored the Milky Way.
The Next Generation (1987–1994) featured the crew of Enterprise D, led by Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Commander William Riker. Deep Space Nine (1993–1999) was almost a direct sequel to this. Voyager (1995–2001) shows the crew of the USS Voyager journey home from the Delta Quadrant, led by Captain Kathryn Janeway.
Enterprise (2001–2005) centers on the voyages of the starship Enterprise, commanded by Captain Jonathan Archer and the Vulcan Sub-Commander T'Pol. Discovery (2017) is a direct prequel to The Original Series, set roughly ten years prior.
More recently, the return of Jean-Luc Picard is shown in is the eighth series in the franchise, Picard (2020).
The Feature films from 1979 to more recently in 2016 show the crew of the Enterprise face their nemeses from across the galaxy and maintain peace. With the cast of these movies starring A-list actors such as Patrick Stewart, Chris Pine, William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and Zoe Saldana, the franchise has achieved great success and had significant cultural influence.
