Japanese Animation
Finding its roots in Japan, anime comprises both hand-drawn and computer animation. In foreign countries, anime is a term used exclusively for Japanese animated works. However, it is more broadly used to categorise all forms of animation within the country itself — ignoring any differentiation between style or place of origin. In addition to animated projects produced inside Japan, there has also been a wave of anime-influenced films and TV series. Despite not falling under the same window, these creations draw heavily from the same art style.
In the 1960s, cartoonist Osamu Tezuka revolutionised the scene of animation with his unique art style. Over time, his approach became popular and branched out into a variety of other works within Japan — characterised by its detailed settings, camera effects, and character proportions (notably large eyes). Though anime is composed of a number of original works, it also boasts frequent adaptations of pre-existing manga.
