Pocket Monsters
Created by Satoshi Tajiri in the 1995, Pokémon is short for ‘Pocket Monsters’. Tajiri originally worked on a Japanese magazine (Game Freak) in the ‘80s. However, he decided to begin developing his own video games, which led to the creation of Pocket Monsters. The success of the franchise led to the further creation of various popular films and TV series — amongst other forms of media.
Pokémon focuses on the Trainer Ash Ketchum as he captures and conditions a number of the eponymous monsters for the purposes of battling them for sport. In total, there are over 802 different creatures featured in the franchise. Nevertheless, one stands out above the rest: Ash Ketchum’s lightning-tailed companion, Pikachu. Ultimately, Ash’s main aim is to win the Regional Championships.
The first two games, titled Red and Green, were released on the Game Boy handheld system in 1996. Over time, Pokémon grew to become the highest-grossing franchise of all time. A popular television series aired in 1997 and has since run for over 20 seasons and 1,000 episodes in 169 countries.
